CHINA DOLL) directed by Shuji TERAYAMA. Since then, Taneda has worked for many highly-esteemed Japanese directors including Shinji SOMAI and Yoichi SAI. Taneda's first feature film as a Production Designer was "1/2 MENSCH: NEUBAUTEN" directed by Sogo ISHII, which was immediately followed by a film "FUTARI _ BOTTI"(aka. JUST TWO OF US)directed by Koshi ENOKIDO. Taneda has won numerous awards for his exceptional design. He has been nominated twice for the Best Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction of the Japan Academy Prize: one for "SWALLOWTAIL" (aka. SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY) directed by Shunji IWAI (the 20th, 1996) and another for "FUYAJO" (aka. SLEEPLESS TOWN) directed by Lee Chi NGAI. (the 22nd, 1998) In 1998, he won the Best Production Designer Award of the 18th Hong Kong Film Awards for "FUYAJO" (aka. SLEEPLESS TOWN). In 2003, Taneda was nominated as the Best Production Designer of Art Directors Guild in USA for "KILL BILL vol.1", directed by Quentin TARANTINO. In 2007, Taneda was nominated for the Best Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction of the 30th Japan Academy Prize: one for "HULA GIRLS" directed by Lee-Sang IL and "THE WOW-CHOTEN HOTEL". And he won the Best Production Designer of the 61st Mainichi Film Award for both films above. Taneda's borderless creativity extends from films to TV shows, commercial films, theaters, exhibitions, art books publications and retail space design. In 2000, his paintings were exhibited at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI)in Rotterdam; exhibitions were titled "Towards Totalscape" and "TOWN for the FILMS -From City into Village" In fall, he was invited as a guest speaker at the European Festival for Production and Visual Effects in Germany where he explained the realization of spectacular 3D design. In Sep. of 2007, his artworks called "THE HOT SET YOHEI TANEDA PRODUCTION DESIGNER ANOTHOLOGY" has published. And two more books will be published. It will be his artworks, original essays and drawings on those books. Last year, Yohei Taneda worked on a film called "KAIDAN" ; Japanese Ghost Story, directed by Hideo NAKATA. He worked on this film as a Production Designer, and he made up a particular view of the old Japanese, beautiful and lyric world. Such as; street of Edo where the capital city in 18th century that is in Edo period. You can see Japanese people's beauty sense is put into the showcase houses for ordinary people. And Japanese old style pub, ruin of a temple, etc.. "KAIDAN" ; Japanese Ghost Story was released to the world in summer of 2007. Latest work of Yohei Taneda is Kohki Mitani's 4th film that's called "THE MAGIC HOUR". He worked on Kohki Mitani's last film "THE WOW-CHOTEN HOTEL", and he continuously participats to the latest film as the Production Designer. The scene for "THE MAGIC HOUR" is fictitious seaport town called Sukago. The ambitious street built in a studio represents its' story, and is an important function.
